Have You Realized the Contributions of New Arrival Women?

Mothers' day is coming soon; have you thought about how to celebrate with your mom yet? Most married women have to bear the work as family carers, a job without pay and without job security, but it has always been neglected. To a group of newly-arrived female immigrants, their contributions are even more under-recognized. In society's rush to label, they are often tagged as lazy and idle.

The "New Women Arrivals League" is an independent self-help organization founded by a group of newly-arrived female immigrants in 2000. Its aim is to mobilize new arrival women to fight for their rights and protection. HER Fund has allocated funds to this organization in 2007 and 2008 to support their work and operating expenses. As Mothers' Day approaches, we have interviewed two committee members of this group to raise your concern to these new immigrants.

Prejudice against new arrivals

Yuet has participated in the League for more than a year. She was first introduced to the League because her daughter went to the same kindergarten as Yeung Mei, the chairperson of the League. At first, Yuet decided to join in order to meet new friends. Later, she felt that the League was developing quite well and a few months later, she became a committee member due to Yeung Mei's encouragement. Unlike those typical stories published in newspapers about newly-arrived immigrants who got married for the benefit of residing in Hong Kong, Yuet and her husband met, got married and had children in the Mainland. Before their marriage, her husband already came to Hong Kong to take care of his grandmother, and Yuet was asked by her elderly father to come to Hong Kong to take care of him. So, this reflects that new arrival women also share the burden of their families. They take up the voluntary role of caring the family, whether it be their parents or their husbands. Just as Yuet said, 'Life in the Mainland is better than in Hong Kong, but for the sake of my family, I had no choice.'

Mei Ling lives in the same public housing estate as Yuet. Having lived in Hong Kong for seven years, she was also encouraged to join the League as a committee member by Yeung Mei, Furthermore, she wanted to help her fellow newly-arrived immigrant "sisters and give them more support". Mei Ling also met her husband, married him and had children in the Mainland, but he came to Hong Kong about twenty years ago to take care of his family, while Mei Ling came to Hong Kong later to take care of her husband and other family members. She remembered that when she first arrived in Hong Kong, other than receiving a little pamphlet from the Immigration Department, she had no other assistance. When her children needed to go to school, she relied on the help of her husband’s friends to learn about the application procedure. Because of differences in culture and customs between Hong Kong and the Mainland, she was scolded when she went shopping in the wet market: 'In the Mainland, when we buy vegetables, it's OK to touch and pick what we want individually, but not in Hong Kong. One time, when I was buying some vegetables, the adjacent vendor kept using water to water his vegetables and he ended up getting me wet too. He called me "you useless Mainlander" and scolded at me for selecting the vegetables, saying that this wasn't in China. This experience of being discriminated against is very hard to forget.' Mei Ling says that if she had joined the League at that time, she definitely would not have kept quiet. She would have told him that he should not discriminate against new arrival women.

Multiple roles and heavy burden for carers

Yuet and Mei Ling's husbands both have jobs. In order to take care of their children that are only 5 or 6 year-old, they have to stay at home and take care of their families and children. Since their husbands and children wake up at different times, they have to make breakfast for them at different times, then send the kids to school, walk for 30 minutes to the market to pick up grocery supplies for several days in order to buy cheaper groceries, then went to pick up kids from school, prepare lunch, looking after the kids to do their homework, bringing them to the park, doing housework and preparing dinner. Although they get up at 6:00 AM, they do not get to sleep until midnight, and everyday is a busy day for them without their own personal space for leisure. Fortunately, their husbands are very considerate and agree to let them help out at the League alongside taking care of the family.

These are just two stories out of the over 100 members of the League. Like the majority of women at the grass-roots level, they have given up their careers and come to a foreign, unknown place for the sake of their families. For the benefit of other new arrival women, they are willing to sacrifice time to learn about policies related to new arrival women, and fight for their rights with the relevant government departments. When you next run into one of them, will you be more willing to listen to them, have a better understanding to know more about them and support them for the choices and sacrifices they have made?

Happy Mothers' Day, sisters!

Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus?!

In our daily lives, we tend to mix up "sex" and "gender" and stick to stereotypical views on men and women. We will have a mini-expose on The Ten Common Myths on Gender.

Misunderstanding #3: Why did my girlfriend turn into a man?

Many women do not buy into gender equality because they are afraid that no one will open the door for them or that no man will treat them to a meal; similarly, many men also do not buy into gender equality because they are afraid that women will become very loud and aggressive or that their jobs will be taken over by women. People are scared because they think that gender equality means "women become men so they will be tough enough not to need any help and that men will become women and they will have to listen and to be subordinate to women".

Men and women have a lot of biological differences. For example, women have menstruation while the muscle development of men is much stronger than that of women etc; as all human beings, men and women have differences. Furthermore, try looking at your friends of the same gender; are there a lot of differences in personality, interests and capabilities too? So, it is impossible for men and women to be "the same", which is not the true meaning of gender equality. In fact, all human being should have equal rights even though they have different characteristics and society needs to provide appropriate legal protection and resources to ensure equal opportunities to everyone. For example, pregnancy is a physiological difference for women, yet they should not be discriminated against or lose job opportunities because of this.

Gender equality does NOT mean that men and women should be "the same"; on the contrary, it is to embrace each other's differences and to accept each other's common basic human rights, such as equal opportunities for education, job selection, lifestyle, political participation, etc. It is not necessary for women to become physically strong and men to become weak to have gender equality. Also, if we insist women to behave and to act like men, this is a distortion of the meaning of gender equality.

St. Mary's Canossian College Zonta Z Club and University of Hong Kong Simon K.Y. Lee Hall Rainbow Village Dorm Residents Help to Raise Funds for HER Fund

To celebrate the March 8 International Women's Day and to raise student awareness of women's rights, St. Mary's Canossian College Zonta Z Club held a charity sale of roses on March 7, raising over $1,300 for HER Fund. We would like to thank the teachers and students of St. Mary's Canossian College for their support!

In addition to the charity sale of roses, the Club also invited us to give a talk on the status of women in Hong Kong for their students. That day, our Honourable Treasurer Ms. Chung Yuen-Yi talked about the status of gender equality in Hong Kong and explained the importance of women's rights. After the talk, students were surprised to hear that women are still treated unfairly in various situations. Hopefully, through this talk, students will be more interested in women's topics and will strive to make a difference in the lives of local women.

Additionally, an annual gathering was held by the young ladies on the fourth floor "Rainbow Village" of the University of Hong Kong Simon K.Y. Lee Hall on April 10. Besides placing donation boxes on-site, all proceeds from that night were also donated to HER Fund. We would like to thank all present dorm residents and alumni of Rainbow Village for their generosity and support to HER Fund and their care to the well being and rights of women!
