Happy to be a Volunteer

Though not tall in build, Sina has a loud and resonant voice. As soon as she walked into HER Fund's office and started talking, her enthusiastic voice instantly dispelled the stiffness brought by the humid and cloudy weather.

ShanShan was interviewing Sina

Being Discretional in Life

Being a freelancer teaching Chinese Mandarin, Sina has been a volunteer at HER Fund for years. Back in 2007, she helped out at a fundraising event through the Agency for Volunteer Service. Ever since then, Sina has been squeezing her time to come to HER Fund's office and assist the staff in some administrative work, including some clerical work, managing the database and mailing publications.

In fact, Sina gained a lot in her volunteer work. During the past three years, she has developed a clear concern on gender issue. "I think Hong Kong people are still affected by old-fashioned thought, that women and men do not enjoy equal rights in this society...... Like my father, he regards men more superior than women." Sina explained further, "in Hong Kong, women suffer from discriminations, both in households and at work. Women are as good as men in doing many works now. However, they usually get paid less than men in respect of the same job." What she elaborated is exactly why HER Fund is here to fight for the gender equality.

Our volunteer, Sina

Having Fun at Work

When asked how she has persisted in volunteering for years, Sina said, "I just want to have fun." Because of Sina's flexible working hours, she could hardly meet up with other friends. Her positive attitude allows her regarding volunteering as a kind of entertainment. "You accompany other people, but at the same time others keep you company too!" said Sina.

"To be honest, the work I do isn't very demanding," Sina claimed. "Every time I come over for an hour or two, so they won't assign me really difficult tasks, such as helped in some surveys," Sina giggled, still speaking loudly with great energy, "If they gave me too much work, would I manage it? Maybe I could not contribute and even cause HER fund trouble!"

"You really don't need to 'persist' in volunteering." Sina suggested. "As long as you don't treat it as a serious job, you won't feel pressured. If I were asked to come at inconvenient time, I don't bother to come at all." Being light-hearted truly helped her to "persist" in volunteering for all these years.

In fact, Sina's attitude in life - her striving to create a personal space for herself, her self-determination and acting for herself - are exactly what we hope all women can achieve for themselves. We are truly grateful for Sina deciding to work with us. We have also benefited a great deal from the positive energy and contributions of volunteers like Sina walking along our way towards gender equality.

Press Conference of Cyber Dating Research held

One of the young girls' projects which HER Fund supported last year was Cyber Dating Research, organized by YMCA Kornhill Centre Integrated Service Centre. The project is to research on the social behaviour of the young girls on the internet. Young girls formed a group through this action research process and held their press conference on 17th July this year. The project provided an empowering experience to the young girls involved, through which they aware of their rights, they decided what is best for them, they made their voices heard and they became enthusiastic to be an active change agent in the community. The girls hosted the press conference and announced the findings, their concerns and recommendations which were expressed in the report.

One of the young girls was being interviewed

The research has three findings: (1) Girls expressed that online relationship and making friends can compensate their social needs as they find that it is very difficult to build trustful and genuine friendship in their social life; (2) girls are not necessarily the ones who are being cheated although they cannot deny there are risks exist in internet friendship; (3) Girls suggested ten smart tips to protect one's own safety and enjoy online friendship. They stressed that both boys and girls need to be careful of any internet trap.

The press conference was led by the young girls' group. They hosted the press conference, performed a drama to announce the research result, being the spokespersons to make their recommendations and shared their cases with the media.  Linda To, HER Fund Executive Director, also delivered a speech to express HER Fund's support and appreciation to the girls effort and achievement, and at the same time, introduced our other funded young girls' projects to the media. Over ten mass media came to interview and to publish the study report, this include Oriental Daily and Sing Tao Daily. The RTHK programme in Radio 2 invited the girls who participated in the research to the 9th July episode. If you want to listen to the episode, you may click here.

Volunteering by Talents Sharing

Most common way of volunteering is to help carrying out different types of work in NGOs, such as flag selling, assisting outdoor activities and services, or helping clerical works in the organization, just like what Sina does for HER Fund.  In recent years, some professionals from business sector help NGOs to develop community enterprise or running business. In HER Fund, we have our Talent Sharing Teachers, Eliza, Kitty and Juliet, who share their talents in our line dance classes and the fees from our students go to HER Fund as donation for making grants to support women and girls' rights work.

This volunteering by talent sharing started since April last year. In our last Issue, we wrote about these three ladies' stories. Here you can listen to RTHK Radio 2 programme interviewing them (only in Cantonese)

The aim of Gender Awareness Raising in Christian Community Project is to empower young girls within the Christian community to share their views and experiences on gender equality within the current church practices and context. It aims to understand the role and status of young girls in the church under the gender lenses and through workshops, direct opinions from young girls will be collected in order to compile a report for making young girls' voices heard.

The aim of ""My Space" Community Education Project" is to empower young girls in the Cyber Friendship Group to become ambassadors and share their views and recommendations towards online friendship with students, parents, teachers and community people. This project is a follow up action after they completed the study on young girls Cyber Dating Research last year.

A Holistic, Peaceful Journey of Karma Yoga - class for all levels

Yoga is an ancient philosophical system of more than 4000 years old. The word “Yoga” is Sanskrit, meaning “to join one point to another”. The mind will finally learn to come to stillness, from where we could see and feel the real beauty, peace and bliss within us.
