French feminist Simone de Beauvoir once famously remarked that "women are nurtured rather than born". In our patriarchal and capitalistic society, only two types of "outstanding" women are socially accepted. One is in the form of Canto-pop star Kelly Chan, whose outlook and lifestyle resemble that of a Barbie doll. The other is Cheuk Wan-chi, whose aggressive traits are conveniently packaged for mass consumption.

This is the bizarre and hypocritical nature of our city's gender politics.

In face of a hostile and anti-intellectual environment, how could Bowie, organizer of Teen's Key, and Fiona, Ex-executive committee member of AAF, stay true to themselves and embark on an adventure of gender liberation. How could the feminist movement in Hong Kong respond to society's patriarchic structure and capitalism?

In this exhibition, there will be no grand dress, pop make-up, professional camera, or “model” body shape… but you can find girls’ self-image and thoughts.

It's just that they are too overwhelmed with child-raising or jobs to deal with the administrative work required of a charity, like bookkeeping."

HER Fund raises more than HK$1 million in donations every year, but To says it's a struggle to rally local support for the dozen groups currently under its wing.

The three projects supported by HER Fund this year, aimed to create new spaces for young women’s empowerment, building their strengths, voices and mutual support.
