Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus?!
In our daily lives, we tend to mix up the Chinese terms "Sex and Gender" and stick to traditional views on different genders. We will do a mini-expose on ten common misunderstandings in e-newsletter. Misunderstanding # 9: To Discover the Gender Inequality from Public Toilets |
||
As a woman, it is
not unusual to come across a long queue in ladies' toilet. As a man, often you
may need to wait for your girl friend or wife for a long time when she goes to
toilet.
Interesting enough, the ratio of men and women is 1:1.25 in Hong Kong, therefore
the government requires shopping centers to improve the number of compartments
in ladies' toilet according to this ratio. The government said :That's gender
equality! You may realize that the number of compartments in ladies' toilet has
been increased, but the long queue is still there. Why? Due to physical
construct, women usually take more steps to go to toilet than men. Also, women
may take longer time in the toilet when they are having menstrual period. From
Singtao Daily news on November 5, 2008, according to the founder of World Toilet
Organization, Jack Sim, women need 105 seconds when they go to toilet, but men
only need 35 seconds. If we do not consider this 3 times difference in actual
need, it is not fair to women. |

The same logic applies to the situation of baby caring room. Not only the number of baby caring room is few, it is often located inside the ladies' toilet assuming that it is the sole responsibility of the mother. Even if the father wishes to help, he would not be able to do so. A fair chance and treatment does not only mean equal in "number" and treating "the same" literally. It means recognition of differences of both sexes and at the same time, providing equal opportunity to them. If we can be more gender sensitive, give more concern, think more on the design, then we will be able to build a better society for all. |

Enjoy Giving in an environmental friendly way - Support HER Fund Online Auction
Since the launch of HER fund online auction in December last year, the kindness of donors has been continuously revealed by active transactions. After knowing more of our work, some bidders even became our in-kind donors and sustained our online auction. All the proceeds, after deduction of necessary expenses, will be granted to projects in supporting disadvantaged women's and girls' rights protection.
Now, we need more items to sustain our online
auction. Your in-kind
donation will help women and adolescent girls in the disadvantaged sector a lot.
You can enjoy giving away extra but good condition items at home in an
environmental friendly way!
