Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus?! | |
In our daily lives, we tend to mix up the Chinese terms "sex" and "gender" and stick to traditional views on different genders. We will do a mini-exposé on ten common misunderstandings in e-newsletter. |

Misunderstanding # 10: Beauty Standard? The mass media keeps dictating what we should look like as "beautiful girls" and "trendy guys". "Beautiful girls" must be young, have fair skin, long beautiful legs, a slim body but full breasts; "trendy guys" must be tall, stoutly built and tan. If we take a look at the cartoons that we grew up with, all the princes and princesses have the above-mentioned qualities, but these mainstream beauty standards are often hardly achieve. As a result, when one fails to achieve these "perfect" standards, may somehow, affect his/her self-esteem and self-confidence. Thus, in order to look "perfectly good", many people spend lots of money on slimming companies or gyms to strive to be "beautiful girls" and "trendy guys". As a result, slimming companies and gyms profit immensely from this, and the power of the media amplified this beauty standard causing more people to fall into this trap. |
|
But who exactly decides your appearance and your accomplishments? Is it parents? Teachers? The media? Products? Friends? Or yourself? The definition of "pretty girls" and "hot guys" should be diverse and broad, different countries and regions are influenced by factors, such as culture, economy, religion, and in different eras; there shouldn't be a specific standard to define this.We should be able to appreciate our beauty and our uniqueness from many different angles, to know what we want and be sure of ourselves in a confident way. |
